A number of studies support the fact that fish and Omega-3 Fatty Acid intake reduce the risk of developing macular degeneration.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids, including DHA and EPA, are derived from deep water fish. They boost the downstream conversion of the Omega 3 to the anti-inflammatory PGE3. Additionally, they also prevent the untoward Omega 6 arachidonic acid cleavage via the delta-5-destaurase enzyme. Itt is believed that their anti-inflammatory effects may play a role in preventing the development of advanced AMD.
In the upcoming AREDS2 (Age Related Eye Disease Study 2), the National Eye Institute will be including DHA and EPA in the nutritional formulas to determine if there is an improved outcome versus established and proven nutritional supplements.
